Hi, my 1951 ES2 is popping out of gear in 3rd & 4th, I guess it could be the pawl spring but not sure? Does anyone know somebody close to me, Midhurst, that could repair/advise as with only 2 reliable gears I cannot see myself getting too far! Any help/advise most welcome.
Kind regards, Mark.
Gearbox repair West Sussex/Hampshire
Thanks John this makes sense. So the remaining question is who could undertake the repair in my area, help please, regards, Mark.
Possible Faults
Self-selecting gears can be due to the Detent spring going soft, sticking or breaking. Worn bearings will also allow the shafts to run out of being parallel to each other. This angles the gears which in turn then allows one push the other along its respective shaft.
Barry Stickland lives near the north Hampshire border and knows quite a lot about early Norton gearboxes. His contact details are on the back page of Roadholder.
Also.....checkout the Heavy Twins Compendium on this Forum. It has a very well-written section, including photos, compiled by Bruce Tinworth, dealing with all of the Norton gearboxes.
Trouble-shooting guide attached below.
The pawl spring fault would stop you selecting the gears, so the pawl spring is not the issue. Popping out of gear is normally worn dogs on the sliding gears and/or worn mating holes/slots on the receiving gears.
