Front fork rebuild

Forums

I'm in the process of refurbishing a '58 Dommie and will probably be picking your collective brains in the coming weeks.....(hmm....months more like).

I've got some new stanchions sorted but are there any mods, upgradesor thoughts on the rebuilding them just for road use? I must mention that this has been "caffed" in it's early history and I want to retain that look so what are the thoughts on outer springs, I know they are internalshort roadholders so the one's I've seen with external springs am I right in thinking that's in addition to rather than a replacement, or isit just unnecessary tat.

TIA,

Mark

Take a look at http://lansdowne-engineering.co.uk for some inspiration.

External springs would free up space inside the stanchion for bespoke damper kits probably for racing purposes. Some may think they look cool.

The above kits have compression on one leg and rebound on the other. Adjustable also.

Well, I went up to Landsdowne Engineering and met John and had the complete guided tour of his "factory" spoke with everyone thereand of course ended up with one of the damper kits and a few other things too, genuine nice bloke.

Wish I lived closer. I do miss the personal contact. Difficult from so far down south. Email just doesn't give the same experience. I'd be interested in the difference in feel as I am planning to buy a set of the fork dampers shortly.

I'll not be using them for a while as the bike is undergoing a total refurb. I hope they'll be a difference as what was on the bike when I had a quick go was rusty stanchions and no oil in the forks at all.
