[Froggie and his P11] Copper seal for primary chaincase

Forums

Hello, instead of regularly changing the primary chaincase seal (and others of course) when adjusting the gap between rotor and stator for example, did anybody tried to put a copper seal? I mean to buy a sheet of copper and cut the seal in it. Is this a good idea for a British bike? Did somebody already tried? How thick dou you think the copper should be? In mm of course ;)

I think the answers is no, no-one has ever tried it. Replacing a conventional gasket with copper would only work if the two faces are particularly accurate, as with a cylinder head joint. The advantage of a thick paper-based gasket is its ability to absorb irregularities easily and of course it is relatively cheap. With a copper gasket you would have to anneal it every time you re-used it, and even so I don't think you would get enough clamping pressure to produce an oiltight joint. Gordon.

Silicone or Silicon re-usable rocker gaskets are becoming very popular. They have been available for cars forsome while now andyou can alsoget versions for the Rocker Covers on the big Norton Twins.

Prices have halved in the last year and are now almost at the point where they would pay for themselves after just 3 checks of the valve clearances.

Surely it won't be too long before some enterprizing chap comes up with a replacement for the Dommie Primary Cover Band, the Commando Primary seals and those on theHybrid models.
