Frame Number

Forums

Hi everyone this is my first post.

I've had a dismantled 750 Interpol in my possession for a few years now and I'm finally getting around to doing something about it. The problem I've just discovered is that the VIN plate is missing from the frame. I think the previous owner removed it when he intended to powder coat the frame but I have not been able to find it in any of the many pots and boxes that hold all of the other parts in either my garage or shed.

Apart from panicking, what do I do? Is the frame number marked anywhere else on the frame? As the frame and engine had matching numbers I do not want to lose the valuable frame number that connects them. Help!

Don't panic! Most Commandos never had a frame number stamped on the frame when they left the factory; if they did, it was on the right hand side of the headstock.

The red plate did not, actually, bear the frame, but the engine number. Not aparent on 750s where both are identical, but on the 850s where the engine numbers are in the 300.000s, while the frame numbers were 850F100.000s.

The red plates can be bought from Andover Norton or the various Norton specialists in the original version, see

Thanks for your reassurance Joe.

I've looked at your link and also found the plate is available from Norvil with free stamping. They even sell the correct rivets. All I'll have to do is send a copy of my log book and they'll put the date and number on it.

I thought I was going to have to contact DVLA and end up with a new number.

Hi again Joe.

You can tell this is my first post as I didn't realise who you were and how kind it was of you to answer my query. I apologise for my rudeness in mentioning the Norvil offering. (I expect some members had a laugh at my expense)

Do Andover Norton provide a number stamping service as I would prefer to deal with you after you have been so helpful?

Hi Glyn,

As its an Interpol, theVIN plate was either never fitted ?? or it was removed by the fairing fitter. ( Considering that they came ready kitted from Thruxton I suspect the former ) The fairing main support wraps around the head stock and therefore the VIN plate would have got in the way. I have never seen a VIN plate on any Interpol.

Dear Glyn,

No reason to apologize- the dealers worldwide sell amongst other things (....) Andover Norton parts, and as long as there are local dealers that is fine. As for the rivets, guess who sells them under # 06-1287, and I frankly don't know if Nick (Andover Norton) will stamp your plate for you or not, but you can ask......

As for Interpols not having the plate, I do not know. In case of the genuine Production Racers the plate was put on the main frame tube behind the petrol tank under the seat nose, as these also had a fairing bracket where the plate would normally go.
