Dear Norton sages,
Have you any ideas and preferrably pictures of where I can mount an external spin off oil filter conversion on my Dominator 650SS? There have been discussions about this on the site, but sadly no pictures. One other thing, is the oil filter best mounted on the oil tank outlet or inlet?
Thanks v much,
Andy English

I mounted mine behind the gearbox in a vertical position, i.e. with the filter hanging down so as you don't spill too much oil when changing it. There are brackets available to mount the filter but these all had the filter mounted horizontally so i made my own bracket.
The filter must be fitted in the return line.

Have a look here: http://www.norvilmotorcycle.co.uk/064283.htm That's what I've done on my 650SS/1966.

Clean solution! The filter element I use (on my MK3) is the "Mann W712/11", also fitting Simca and Citroen 2CV cars. The advantage being a built in bypass to allow oil to flow even with a clogged filter.

You make a good point about siting the filter vertically. It will make filter changes far cleaner. Be aware that a new filter will take time to fill, and that deprives the valve gear of lubrication. A vertical oil filter can be filled before installation.
I mounted mine on a 1 1/8" plate between the RH rear engine-plate bolts, so that the filter points backwards to the rear wheel, and the pipe unions face forwards. That meant that the pipes pass over the gearbox between the engine plates. It may also mean that the filter is easier to grasp when filter change time comes. Or maybe not. Time will tell
My position has the advantage that I can still place a plastic bottle behind the gearbox outer cover and ahead of the s/arm pivot, as an engine breather catch tank. If I get really keen, I will add a plastic tube from the oil tank breather as well

Well, setting fire to it would certainly achieve that aim. However, if you're likely to need it subsequently...

Has to be on the inlet ie the return pipe or your engine may not get any oil.
