Ewarts fuel tap

I still have my orrig tap in use!, its the pull on -twist -turn and pull again for reserve type ,In the past i have fitted a new cork no problem,Current corks are all too big. Sanding down sounds a bit hit /miss anyone done this ? Am i wasting my time with ethanol soon to be universal?.

Morning Bob. I've successfully re-corked my Ewarts tap a couple of times using the synthetic cork now found in most remaining non-screwtop wine bottles. It seems to be fairly impervious to the horrors that constitute modern petrol.

The manufacturing method that I devised was to get some thin brass tube of the same internal diameter as the tap body (from a local model shop), sharpen the end to make it cut then twist it into the 'cork' to cut a plug. With the plug still in the tube (to hold it firm), I then drill out an appropriately-sized hole so that it will fit over the push-pull shaft of the tap. Job's a good 'un.

Is the current cork destroyed, or simply dried out and gone hard? If the latter, put it in a cup, with a little washing-up liquid, and fill with boiling water. Leave it overnight, and, it should swell, and soften. Re. Ethanol, why solve a problem that has not occurred yet? Since cork, and ethanol, are both organic substances, there maybe no harmful reaction.

Robert: 'ethanol soon to be universal?.' Glad you put that question mark in there. Far too many folks roll over and just accept this solvent in our petrol. It is only added to help meet government renewable targets and nothing more.

We need to campaign and challenge. Other than meeting targets there is no reason why all petrol needs to contain this stuff. There is none in it when it leaves the refinery, it is added from a sealed tanker at the distribution point.

If you want Ethanol you have that choice and if you don't then we should have that choice. Don't get me started on light bulbs!

Hi.

I replace my corks using a cork borer to cut the 'blank' and then lightly nip it up in the lathe chuck and drill the centre. The best cork for the job has been from Tesco Cava bottles - much closer 'grain' than other wine bottles.

I bought some new BAP "These don't leak" taps, The filters fell out within an hour and the fuel leaked down past the thread in the nut. Gone back to the 55 year old Ewarts .

Thanks for your kind offer Eugene,I have some spare plungers of this type but they dont fit a orriginal tap with the reserve action as fitted to a 60 Norton, I will no doubt have to take mine to bits for soaking and soaping soon, I'll take a photo for your interest.Must be a lot of unused plungers sitting in drawers all round the world!.

I would certainly be interested in a better arangement than the old cork system. But as I stated I have not yet found a supply that fits. The 60 Norton came with a tap that did both normal and reserve and used a longer plunger than those availiable.

Interesting. If anyone has an old plunger of the longer type that I can borrow, I will see if we can make up a batch :)

Hi Skip, I think you would be surprised how many Norton owners have bought new plungers only to find out that they do not fit. Not worth making a fuss,throw it in the spares box and order up a BAP or similar tap. Lets hope you can resolve this.

I have sold over 300 of these plungers & not a single return yet! I have not yet seen the push pull reserve yet, but am anxious to make them available. A friend with a 1957 model 99 has a tap on one side of the tank only, but it incorperated 2 plungers, one for standard, one for reserve. We used these ne plungers on that type with no issues. We have also sold some to folks with Seagull outboard boat engines!

I have bought up some new old stock plungers complete with fitted corks,these are for the EWarts tap that combines the normal and reserve functions in one tap and is orriginal equipment to the 60 slimline and probably other years. Its longer than the usual E-Bay offerings with an extended slotted brass section and I have never seen these up for sale anywhere. I have about 9 spare which I will sell on .I would prefer that the Norton lads get first stab at these,Whats the best wayto do this?.
