Early Roadster gaiters

Forums

Hi I have a 1970 Roadster with the "halo" type headlight support and the ignition key in the side panel as per the "S" type. The bike I have appears quite original but has fork gaiters fitted. Somewhere in the deepest recesses of my mind I think I read that early Roadsters di have gaiters for a short time. the ones fitted have certainly been on a fair time judging on their condition. Can anyone confirm this or is my memory playing tricks on me (again). Thanks David

Regardless of whether or not gaiters were originally fitted, they are a good idea. A few years ago, I bought a '71 Commando, which had just been restored, without gaiters. Within 18 months there was pitting on the stanchions. I treated the pitting with rust remover followed by epoxy resin, and left it to harden, for a week, before rubbing down. After a smear of grease, gaiters were fitted. The bike was sold last year, and, although the gaiters were in need of replacement, there was no further pitting and the resin had stayed in place. John.
