Dove Grey spray paint

Forums

Dear All,

Does someone know where I can buy a can of Dove Grey (you know, that light grey that we rather call"mastic" in France)spray paint to erase some marks of the "adjustments" made on my 1960 de Luxe Dommie (Blue and Dove Grey)?

Many thanks. Enjoy your riding!

To Laurent

Why this colour was called Dove Grey has long been a mystery,it was actually an off white. The paint I use on my de luxe is VW Pastel White but whether this would match your bike is another story.

Good luck Ron Milton

It's actually Ford Dove Grey (in reality, a shade of beige) and it's available in aerosols from car accessory shops, in the UK at least.

You are not the first to ask about Dove Grey paint, I my self have asked aboutthis paint colour.

Some time ago (September 30, 2010) John Dunn saidArabian Grey was very close so I am using it on my 1960 Dommiso there will be at least 2 Nortons this colour.

It is a Rover Group colour, code No. GR 31

Dove Grey (as used on all the Lightweight Twins) was NOT an off-white colour - or cream colour. That is an error thats been compounded over the years. The colour had a hint of grey in it, and the closest the Tech Team have got to it is British Leyland Arabian Grey (see above for a Rover ID for it). Any Beige, Cream, or off-white colours are simply not correct.

However, never say never. If you can prove me wrong, I'm big enough to accept it. You would need to show me an original part, that has NEVER been repainted. Good luck!

I have an original mudguard with the Dove Grey paint still intact. I am going to have my local PPG distributor match the color before I restore the guard, will be happy to share the PPG paint code once I get that done.Peter B.

Hello Peter. Have you had any success with the colour match for the Dove Grey paint as I am about to restore my 1962 99 which has two colours, one of which is Dove Grey. If you were successful in getting a colour match I would be very grateful to have the code. While we are on the subject of paint, do you have the code for the dark grey? Many thanks, Jim

I would like to thank all the people who have come up with there opinion of the colours for the two GREYS for the standard Domi, A question that will I'm sure be asked for years to come so I think that we have to select the one we think is THE ONE. Dale gave me a link mailto:sales@rsbikepaint.co.ukwho I contacted and they appear to have what we are looking for but who knows?

Good luck to you all. Jim

Some information about Dove Grey and Arabian grey paint.

I could be near the first to actually use Arabian grey paint in place of dove grey in anger, so let me tell you my tale.

I got 1/2 a litre of BLGR31mixed then set about using it, I always use beige primer, andthis was a mistake this time asI could not see where the Arabian greystarted and the primer ended, as the colourwas all most the same. This can not be correct I said to my self and looked up theBL colour chart on the inter web,GR31 was discribed as "very light grey" and this GR31 was not grey.

I then got a 1/2 a liter mixed at a different paint shop, and this was the same so twosuppliers can not be wrong.

So be warned if you are still going to use GR31 (and I am) use a different colour primer, I hope this will shed some light on the colourof Arabian Grey paint.

I have a 62' 99 and need to paint it with the correct colours, I've tried to find out if rsbikepaint will ship to me in Canada (so far no response....) but can someone tell me how much paint would be required to paint the bike? They offer it in various sizes and I don't want to order too little or way too much.

Arabian Gray GR31 is a close match, however, I wanted somthing that was available in powder coat too, for the mudguards.

A very good match is RAL (That's the company) 1013.. I'll be collecting my 99's mudguards on Tuesday.

I would foget power coating its Not all its Cracked up too be, and it peels off, and leave rush underneath . Good old fashioned Cellulose paint is the Best.or Synthetic enamel. like ICI Techaloyd bushing on paint . See the VMCC web site . and Nu-again Paints Bedford have been in business since 1946. they can mix you any colour and type of paint you need . and supply you with any equipment you need for spray painting and they stock under coats and top coats and lacquers and custom paints www.nu-again-paints.co.uk phone 01234-355990

I'm with Anna on not using powder coating. It gets rust "worms" if the steel wasn't completely degreased and de-rusted immediately before painting. To be fair, that can happen with any paintwork though. I havespare powder-coated widelineoil tank, battery box, repro lid (new) and tray which show signs of the thin "worms" and they have never been outside of my centrally-heated home! When it happens the item needs complete stripping and repainting - no good touching up. I go for stove-enamel, as per original. I'm lucky enough to have a good paint/prep shop near me who does it all. Blasting. stoving, powder-coat and probably cellulose, although I'm not sure about that due to legal reasons.

First time around I always used cellulose on cars, vans and bikesas it's very forgiving and you can even do it outdoors on a warm, dry day - but that was in the 1960s and 70s!

Good luck

Lionel.

You know that there are bad powder coating jobs just as there are bad paint jobs. (And other jobs too)

There are only two powder coaters I would use around here, both do top quality jobs and motor vehicles is about all they do. All of my coating is still in top condition, the earliest coated in 1993. I wish I knew where I could get it coated earlier.

Back to the topic: The RAL1013 mudguards are superb and since, I have bought some RAL 1013 paint for the tank. You can buy it in aerosols, tins or touch up pens. My No 2 tank was painted using aerosols, in this case mixed by CJ Aerosols but other companies such as RAL Coloursare out there.

My No 1 tank is chemically stripped, etch primed and put away for another day. The No 2 tank which I will initially use has been internally coated with Wyldes Flowliner, Ethanol resistant. This is a two part application you mix together but you keep going till you just about use it all up. Looks a very good job. I must let you know how it is doing next year although I don't use fuel with Ethanol knowingly. If it is not fit for aircraft it is not fit for Norton's.

Anyway, each to their own and whatever finish you are happy with is all that matters. As long as it is prepared and applied properly you should have a smooth, shiny and durable finish, either way. In my case I choseRAL 1013 as an excellent match for Norton Dove Grey and it is readily available as a standard colour. That's all.

+1

I have powder coated parts from mid 80's on my BSA and Norton and all the parts show no signs of rust, these were done by a Birmingham powder coater. I have a set of steel gates outside 24/365 powder coated in Glasgow 15 years ago, again no sign of rust and they have continued to do all my current car & motorcycle requirements again with no issues.

I would be sympathetic with anyone who subtituted a cream or off white ,the unfaded Dove grey on the back of my panels is not a pleasing colour, the faded face of the panels is far better.I used a synthetic polyurethane transport coach paint with 10% added retarder to brush the finish , Looks ok (from a distance!), The dove grey needs many coats ,the red covers well so i would say about a litre of each would do it.
