Hello

I have recently brought a Domiracer with a lowboy frame and i would like to put a uk number plate on it, both the engine and frame numbers are there but the lowboy frame is a replica. The question is,willI be able to get a dating certificate? and if so, will theage related plate be the same age as the engine or will it bethe same age as the frame?

Hello A replica frame you will not get a age related Number for your Machine , you will end up with a Q plate only ?

A registration number is usually based on the frame / chassis number. If the frame number is post 1962 then any registration number based on that would have the appropriate suffix letter. Prior to 1962 in most areas, the 'age-related' number is simply based on the period sequence, not truly year specific.

Assuming that the number on the frame is a Norton number then I think that you're perhaps making unneccesary difficulty by saying that in your opinion the frame may have been replaced at some time. Sleeping dogs, let 'em lie and all that.

If the frame is a newly built 'special' and not a new replacement of the original then you're probably getting into the territory of single vehicle approval, 'Q' plates, reflective number plates and road tax.

It's not really fair, considering all the choppers and Triumph engined bitsas that have been registered in the past but the rules are more strictly enforced now.

thank you for the reply,

That makes alot more sence, the numbers on the frame are 0504 so it sounds to me like its a new built frame. Could someone tell me if the engine number is an original norton number because the bore and stroke of this engine is 66 x 72.6 and it has been tuned by hemming.

Here is a picture of the engine number.

Unfortunately, you have missed the engine number. It's at the front, left side of the crankcase. A bit forward of what your photo shows. The 14 is the model code and is for a 99 600 but 66 x 72.6 are standard 88 dimensions. Have you actually measured these? At the top back of the left crankcase there should be the model type, 88 for a 500 or 99 for a 600. You should see 99 to go with the 14. Of course, you might have an 88 crank inside! Have you got any provenance to show that this motor was one built by Mick Hemmings?

Ihave not measured the bore and stroke, the 66 x 72.6 is what is stamped on the right hand crank case.I shall have another look around the crank cases for the model type and fingers crossed an engine number. so i am guessing that the H115R is the crankcase mating number. the previous owner told me the engine was built by Mick Hemming and the rocker cover has got his name stamed on it.

Thank you for the information

Just a thought, you could easily have a 99 engine and 88 crank & barrels. The engine model code(14) is telling us what was originally in the engine (600cc crank & barrel), but if you count the fins on the cylinder, there are 8 on the modeld 88 (500cc), and 9 fins on the model 99 berrel (600cc). Its an easy thing to check without doing any work :)
