Gene, you would think that…
Gene, you would think that's how it should work but insurance companies are a law unto themselves and "work in mysterious ways, their wonders to perform"! How longIS a piece of string anyway? Monetary value can vary from day-to-day andauction-to-auction. Speaking of which, auction houses might be the best people to value a bike, car or anything. Ebay is, of course, the very LAST place to expect an accurate 'valuation' or a decent price! It's very much the luck of the draw there and most buyers (like me!) expect to pay bottom dollar for anything. I'm an expert eBay buyer for all sorts of stuff related to my hobbies - music, photography, bikes, cars, DiY, DVDs etc. etc.!
For insuring my own Nortons the insurance company only wanted my valuation - the same with cars.
Cheers, Lionel

Realistically, the insurance companies do not want you to insure a $1,000.00 beater for $10,000.00 and then the bike magically "gets stolen"

Hello Russ since no one as answered your question correctly , I will attempt to answer it for you , But first you have not said what model it is, Or if it has matching engine and frame numbers , And I do not mean the ones on the log book , but the one on the machine its self, then there is the colour very important ,getting the colour wrong means up to £2k off the values of the bike, and the condition of the machine and weather there is any modification on the machine , This is just the start , too give you a valuation you need to be as close , as you can get with the condition of the machine , as if it was stolen for your locked work shop or garage , these are the thing you would have too put down on the forms you would have too fill in , so the police would know more at what they where looking for , also you need to put down if there where any other stamp marks or special features on the machine , hope this may help , yours Anna J Dixon

Hi Russ - I personally think you need to look at at the current 'market value' of your motorcycle. At present prices/values seem rather high - I've seen Commandos at £7500.00 ! - but if they can get it then so be it !
Insurance premiums seem to start at a base figure regardless of what the bike is and then rise 'gently' - i.e £2000.00 increase in value may only cost £20.00 in increased premium (depending on circumstances). Look in the classic bike mags and see what's going and base your figures on that (but be realistic - if your bike's a dog then be honest !).
If you want an answer from most of us we need to know which model/year etc. your bike is - -

Russ, The Norton Owners Cl…
Russ,
The Norton Owners Club has a partnership with Footman James for insurance of Nortons. The company will let you self-certify a machine up to a value of £5000. That figure has been in place for some time and it does not reflect the changes in market value of classic motorcycles in recent times. It could do with being revised upwards.
Above that figure, higher agreed values will be accepted provided that they are endorsed by the NOC Records Officer. FJ will issue you with an agreed value form to fill in and you have to send that together with multiple photographs of the machine firstly to the Records Officer and then once he has signed it, to FJ.
The Records Officer will not sign off the form if he thinks that the value you are suggesting is too high. Remember that the value of a classic bike is not the sum of what you paid for it plus the cost of the restoration work and/or extra bits you have added to it.

Thanks for the response Ma…
Thanks for the response Mark....keep looking at the bike mags but cant find anything similar as I have put a lot of my own design language into this machine.....am hoping to get it featured in classic bike magazine shortly so maybe you can give me your opinion when you see a photo of it..must admit, without sounding too modest, its a bit special..best regards..Russ.

Hi Russ, What country are you from? I had to do the same for a couple of my bikes here in the USA & my insurance company wanted a note from a bike dealer with their letterhead. I went to my local Brit bike repair shop, told them what I thought the bike was worth, they wrote it up & away I went.
I really don't understand why they make us do this dance, because really, they are insuring a dollar valuearen'tthey? If you want to insure your bike for a million Dollars, Pounds, Lyra, Pesos, etc. you have to pay a higher premium than if you insure it for 100Dollars(or Pounds).
