Try this firm listed below. They are highly recommended by a number of NOC members. Itook my Commando and 99 Barrels to them last week for sorting out. The engineer mentioned that my 99 barrels would need resleeving using the proper lipped liners.

The only drawback is their location....if you live some distance away.

Quite convenient for me in Southampton! They re-bored my 99 cylinders and re-faced my radiused cam followers to make them flat! Something none of the other 'famous' Norton dealers would do! They were recommended to me many years ago by Norman White (Thruxton)

Hi John.

I used Tony Hartlen, Hartlen Eng. I believe he now trades under the name of 'The Rebore Shop" and is situated at; The old saw mill, Shere Rd, Albury ,Surrey GU5 98W. Tel 01252 728270.

He is a very skilled old school engineer and has been into this sort of work since the 60s. He did an excellent job and reground the top surface before fitting the new flanged liners, whilst I was there another guy brought in a Norton barrel for repair which had been resleeved buy another well known suppier and on start up was greeted with a heavy rattle caused buy one liner letting go, best avoided.

I suppled the linners which came from RGM, Part no 100021 I think.

I would advise getting hold of the pistons of your choice before the rebore as it is advisable to take these to the company you choose so that they can get the correct clearance.

Depending on your choice of piston, it may be difficult to get what you want, I used BHB I obtained from the club, all I could get was bare +. 010" and then it took me a long time to source the correct pins and rings.

Hope this helps,

Best regards, Steve.

Hi John,

I recently took my spigotted 99 barrels to David Burton Engineering in Fleetwood Lancashire. His telephone number is 01253 868111. The good thing about David is that he is a motorcycle engineer who knows old British motorcycles and more importantly he has most of the old reference manuals with the factory limits and fits to be used, unlike most general engine reconditioners. My particular barrel was a bit of an oddity in that it had already been lined on one cylinder, possibly from manufacture. When the liner was removed it exposed the fins part way down the barrel even though the bore was at the recognised normal diameter for 99 liners at 72mm. (A good reason not to bore 99's beyond 40 thou OS). Due to this, he had to make a special oversize liner in order to clean up the bore and maintain the correct fit of the new liner.

I fitted new standard BHB pistons which were the original Norton fitment, still obtainable from Russell motors London 020 778 1714 and I have never looked back since.

Best regards

Jim
