Dominator 99 engine sprocket tight to remove

Forums

i am having nightmare on removing the engine sprocket on my domi 99. I have tried a 3 legged sprocket puller, with the result of the legs breaking, used a 2 legged puller, heating up the boss of the sprocket with the blow lamp, and sharp swift blows on the puller shaft to try and shock it off. Can anyone advise on other methods too remove without causing damage, thank you

You have to use the proper original engine sprocket puller - not the weeny ones on sale which cover Commandos as well. If you use a hydraulic puller, BE CAREFUL. The one time I did, I wound it on and on with me peering at the sprocket from time to time then it went with a colossal bang - right through a new gallon can of oil andembedded itself in the brick wall of the garage.

A proper puller, some heat perhaps and a sharp tap really should do the trick.

I had similar with my Commando. The esteemed Mr Emery said heat: ' until smoking!'.... then a damn good clout! (using the proper screw in puller). It worked, but don't try and pick it up straight after!!

Have a browse through this site for more on this. They can fly off suddenly with potentially lethal results if a fragile bit of you is in the way. Mine came off in the middle of the night (I imagine with a loud bang) all by itself several hours after I left it with a puller in place as tight as I could make it.

Where are you based? ,I have the proper Norton Bracebridge St puller which is a deceptively simple thing but works. Normal pullers are usually not up to the job.

The secret of the puka puller is that it has a very fine thread to exert the max pull plus the arms are specially shaped to fit in the teeth of the sprocket which allows a direct and not angled pull.It can still need a whack and as said can come off with a bang!!.Also consider that a heavy blow could crack the case and any impact goes through the ball bearing on the other side.
