Difficulty in selecting gears, both up & down

Forums

Hi Guys.

I have a mk3 Interstate 850, and recently have experienced poor and

difficult gear changes . It must be said I have recently fitted a new neautral light switch, prior to this everything was fine. I have backed off the switch until the light just comes on in neautral, thinking this perhaps was too far in and binding on the cam, but, no, it's still the same. I have adjusted the clutch, fresh oil, but still THE SAME. I'm now going mad with frustration.

PLEASE, can anyone throw any light on the above.

Regards

If the selector mechanism is engaging correctly then it sounds like clutch drag. Commandos are pretty prone to it. It could be that the centre is worn / plates damaged but most likely they just need thoroughly cleaning - I use 'Scotch-Brite' and a solvent.

If you've over-filled with oil then it will definitely drag - don't fill to the level plug on the mainstand. It's best to measure the oil in (and pour via the timing window, not the clutch adjuster or it'll go straight in the clutch basket).

Thanks Richard. All points noted. I must say the gear lever itself is quite sloppy , maybe this could be the culprit ?

Hi,

Try replacing the hairpin spring (the thin one)on the selector mechanism if you cannot select or miss gears. Note, the straight leg of this springgoes uppermost. If the gearchange is stiff, have a look at the camplate plunger - thesecan wear resulting in a groove that eventually wears through causing the camplate to stick.

More unlikely but worth looking at,I had a laydown box (similarmechanism) which refused to change gear. Despitetaking it apart and re-assembling several times I couldn't find out what was wrong. Eventually I sussed it -one of the pegs on thegear selectors that locate into the camplatewas a little high and protruded through the camplate catching the gearchange quadrant on the other side. Thiswas onlyevident when the box was completely assembled. This could happen with an AMC box too.

Good luck.

The Mk3 lever can get quite loose and there is more free play than with a right hand shift but it's got to get very bad before it's a problem. Incorrect lever positioning could make it difficult to change in one direction unless you have universal joints for ankles but I don't think that it would make it a problem both ways.

If you pull in the clutch, in neutral, you should be able to depress the kickstarter with your other hand and feel only the slightest friction. If it's really stiff and tries to turn the engine then you have too much drag for a clean change. There can of course be various reasons for this but too much oil or sticky plates are quite likely (and free to fix apart from yet another gasket !)
