Dating certificate with last digits of frame number?

Forums

Hi, is it possible to get a dating certificate with the last digits of the chassis number? my frame number has the year built (N) wich is 1957then theres abit missing, then the last 4-5 digits? Is there anyone out there that can help?I really want to make sure i can get this bike on the road before i restore it too much, the bike isnt complete, can i get a dating cert before i build it, or do i have to build it first, then find out i cant put it on the road?Ive never had to go down this road before, ive just bought the bike to restore recently, its been sat in a garage for about 30 odd years, and the owners lost the log book/reg plateSteve.

Contact the NOC Club Records Officer

Provide him with as much information, as possible, to help narrow down the probable date of manufacture. eg. Model, engine number, gearbox number, engine shop number, colour (if still original) etc.

As you already know the year of manufacture model letter foryour bike is 'N' this will help.

Dominator Twin engines for the year beginnifng 1957 (letter 'M') started with the number 71***. By January 1958 (letter 'N') the numbers began with 77***.

Many postwar Nortons had the same frame and engine numbers. The answer for your bike may be on the engine, if original still.

Is it possible to get a copy of the factory build info as I gather this is the only thing that will satisfy the DVLA as to the MOT situation . Club paper is not enough.

Sorry to be a pain, but could you explain how this works? Ive never been in this situation, but i can assure you, yours, and everyone elsesadvice is very much appreciated!

I think i know what my frame number is, by going off the date stamp on the headstock, and narrowing it down through model years, and codes, its either 104663 <-- (mostlikley)or 107663, These both come into the vintage 1962/63.

Again, many thanks for your efforts, Steve.

Bikes built before 1960 do not need to be Mot'd. mine was built in 1959 and registered in 1960, the DVLA have it as 1960 and need convincing of the error of their ways!!.A written appeal is possible with factory documentation but not club.

The precise details of the new MoT rule have been evolving since its introduction at the end of last year. The NOC Records Officer maintains contact with DVLA and is keeping up to date with developments. The situation is not altogether as simple as it might at first seem. Any statements you read here about what is and what isn't, are more likely than not to be speculation rather than fact.

I will see if it is possible at this stage for the Club to issue a statement on this matter via the web site.
