Hi Guys, On my Mk3 the engine sprocket that houses the sprag clutch has got a big cutout for a woodruff key, but there is no corresponding cutout on the crankshaft, is this right? Thanks to all for answering my other queries , I don't know what I'd do with out you lot! Cheers Tony.

Hi Tony, Begs the question…
Hi Tony,
Begs the question, was this engine running before you took it apart ??
As above ( steve) and check that the woodruff key has not been sheared off smooth in the crankshaft ? Run your finger around the tapered area to feel any unusual roughness.

The keyway in the crank is quite a bit longer than the key. I'd be surprised if it has disappeared completely.
Positioning of the alternator rotor is important (for the timing marks) and location of the engine sprocket isn't but from memory the two keyways are 180? apart.

What an eejit I am,found it I wasn't looking far enough back, I've taken it off to get my engineering mate to do the mod to prevent the sprag from going over centre, thanks again, Tony.

hi Antony
Take the engine sprocket off and have another look,it has to be keyed as this takes the initial drive from crankshaft to primary chain,Plate number 27 ,its part no is NME3682 engine sprocket key.
