Commando wheel build information - offsets

Forums

Hi All,

After months of advertising for a set of Commando spoked wheels (thanks to the 'scammers' who offered me their complete bikes for $300 with rebuilt engine and new wheels!!), I'm giving up and am going to have a set built up from scratch. I didn't really want to do this as I'm not actually keen on fitting new parts if I can get good second hand parts and generally prefer 'oily rag' bikes than minters because I actually ride my bikes! Anyway, my bike was fitted with cast wheels when I acquired it so I don't have the required information to enable a correct build.

Now then, apologies if this has been discussed many times in the past but I would appreciate your input before sending my hubs off for a wheel build. I have read the notes in the Technical section, but would appreciate some confirmation from yourselves:

1. I'm planning on using a mk3 front hub (circlip bearing retention) with a WM2 x19" rim. I understand that the rim should be centered in the forks, but could someone please confirm the correct offset between disk mounting flange and centre, preferably by direct measurement of a 'straight' bike.

2. I'm planning on using the standard 1973 rear cush drive drum braked hub with a WM3 x18" rim and have noted Vernon's definitive answer in the Technical section, i.e rim should be laced 1/8" to RHS of hub centre. Is this known to be correct?

3. I'm looking at using Central Wheel Components and using theire stainless rims. Can anyone recommend this company and their products?

With postage charges as they are, I am keen to get this right first time so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Best wishes,

Ian (1973 Commando on a tight budget!)

As mentioned in another thread, I have an 850MkIII and:-

I have taken my front wheel out and measured:-

The rim width is 69mm

The gap between a straight edge on the disk mounting surface to the edge of the rim is 13mm

So the offset is 47.5mm

Which is 1 7/8"

Close enough to the 1 13/16 mentioned in elswhere.

Regards

Tony
