Commando US spec 850 1974

Forums

Hi Just bought a 1974US850 Commando, I am puzzled as to why my speedo is on the right, tacho on left as photos I have seen seam to be the oposite.

Is the gearchangeone up four down or one down four up.

Please advise

Welcome.

I have a UK 1974 850 and my speedo is also on the right. I can't say for certain if this is correct, but my bike is pretty original and there are others I've seen with this arrangement. If you have a standard Norton box you only have four gears: one up three down.

Good grief!!!!..........after 36 years would you expect the bike to be as it left the factory. Whats involved in a previous owner swapping tacho & speedo?...about the same as swapping handlebar switch blocks over or any of the other convertible things on such an ancient bike. My own, now Interstate, was a roadster when I bought it. People swap the disc brake from one side to the other, and yes I know about the oil seal retaining ring that unscrews itself if on the wrong side. Really, tacho and speedo are a simple item to change around.

It's a funny thing, people buy brand new cars / bikes / whatever and the first thing they want to do is put aftermarket exhausts, wheels, and any other personalised bits onto the thing. many of these vehicles were ever only bog standard for the first five minutes after they left the showroom, if that. Now we're worrying about detailed originality. Some of the best bikes ever have been destroyed by restorations. Imagine trying to figure out a now new Harley in 36 years time!!

Hi Steve, the speedo is on the left on my `74 MK2A. The gear shift is one up, three down ,i.e. 1+3=4 gears

For what it's worth Steve, I thought it was a perfectly civil question.

I was under the impression that this was a forum for sharing information on commando"s, a place where one can ask the most basic question and get a thread on the correct answer, not a platform for blowing smoke up your own arse !

The gentlemans question was valid and did not deserve such an insensitive and to be honest, such a rude response such as yours.

Are you a norton specialist mentioned in the " poor quality " query or perhaps a teacher ! mmm, I wonder.

Paul.
