Commando switchgear

Forums

hi has anyone had any experience with adapting the sparx switchgear, part no spx019, to the existing lucas assembly. the mounting board for the indicators has broken and i am searching for a possible replacement, without compromising the originality of my machine, a 1972 750 interstate. any thoughts please. regards alan

Recently replacedtheworn out right side Lucas indicator / engine cut out switch on my '73 MK 1A 850 with the Sparx pattern switch - wiring was straightforward and followed exactly the Lucas switchcolour codes so it was just a simpleunplug of old unit noting where each colour coded wire went inthe various wiring loom connectors strapped to the frame top tubeunder the petrol tank , then connecting up the Sparx unit.

However, the 4 mounting holes on these two switches although matching up exactly require different lengthmounting screws and the ones supplied with the Sparx unit were wrong length for securring to the front brake master cylinder. I had no problem finding correct thread and approxcorrect lengthreplacements atmy local B and Q warehousewhich I hacksawed to the correct length so they screwed inand held the Sparx unit securely to the master cylinder.

Visually you have to lookvery closely to tell the difference from the original Lucas unit.

thanks james for the info. iwas also wondering if it would be feasible to swap the internal switchgear/mounting into the original lucas, thus keeping the originality and overcoming the issue with the screws as you noted. regards alan

I wouldn't want to attempt this - the internals of the two switches are pretty different and a straight swap of bits is not possible without quite major and fiddly modifications. The chances are you'd end up with a switch that doesn't work properly - like the original one you're replacing ! I'd be content with the Sparx pattern unit which looks just like the Lucas switch from a couple of feet away.

I've searched everywhere for original old stock Lucas switches but seem unobtainable. Same story with the more complex black switches on MK 3 850stoo - I've also got a '76 model with the leftswitch ,which has the indicators , getting hit and miss now.
