Commando grab rails

Forums

Hi

I've got a 71 Commando and can set it up as an Interstate or Roadster as I have all the parts. I want to fit a grab rail to it but most suppliers offer a different one for each set up. Is there anyone who has been in this situation who can recommend the type that will fit both sets adequately as I don't really want to buy both.

Regards

The grab rails were certainly different at one time. The early (1972-on) Interstate rail was longer and looked 'squarer'. I'd doubt if it could be moved close enough to a Roadster seat to be comfortable.

For 1973, Norton listed 06-3632 (Interstate) and 06-3819 (Roadster). However, the 1975 850 Mk3 used one rail (06-4978) for both versions. The 1975 'Supersession and Amended Part No.' list shows 06-4978 replacing 06-3819 for the Roadster (and makes no mention of the Interstate).

This makes me suspect that the Mk3 rail was a slightly amended Roadster rail. I can confirm that it fits both types (but does have to be moved back along the frame for the Interstate, of course).

Grab rails didn't appear until the 1973 model range. The distance between the rear loop frame rails was 6 3/4" for the 750s while from 1973 the 850 has a dimension of 7 3/8" measured 4" forward of the rear. You may find the available grab rails will not fit your '71 without a bit of reforming.
