I would be grateful for some advice please. My '71 Commando has been running really well. Carbuartion is fine and the bike starts from cold normally at the first kick. However today it cut out after about 3 miles. After a pause with fuel turned off and throttle wide open the engine fired up. With fuel back on the bike ran for about 500 yards then cut out again. Once back homeI drained the carbs and carb filters. There was some slight residue. With carbs reassembled the bike was fired up and ran for about 45 secs then cut out again. I have not dismantled the carbs yet and suspect a blockage to the jet or sticking float needles. The carbs have had the 'ethanol proof' upgrade. Am I right to look at carburisation or are the coils or rectifier causing an electrical failure? Grateful for your advice.
Thanks Steve

Michael thanks I shall have a look I am beginning to think it may be an electrical issue SMS when I attempt to restart and turn the ignition on the bike backfires indicating perhaps unburnt fuel. I am going to investigate the cut off switch to check for a loose wire. This does not account for no problems when running from cold for the first three mies or so....

Might be worth checking the petrol tank breather. If it's blocked it could produce these symptoms. Gordon.

Is your ignition system standard or do you have an aftermarket ignition?
You might check/replace the capacitor as they will go bad over time.
