Commando clutches

Forums

Hi another commando mk3 restoration question i went to fit the clutch on my mk 3 that came with the bike noticed that it has only four sureflex friction plates,i read that the mk 3 and 850s used 5 friction plates and that the 750s used four.Is the clutch drum and the centre the same for all commando`s and just the plates that are a different thickness ?my drum and centre are in good condition my friction plates measure up at 0.142" the steel plates measure up to 0.076" and the pressure plate 0.287" 4 friction and 4 steel plus the pressure plate .any info would be of great help Thanks. Dave.

The 850 used sintered bronze plates with a hardened centre. Don't put bronze plates with a non-hardened centre as its life will be even shorter than the later version.

Drums never wear, but the centres have a hard life.

Stack height is the important thing, rather than number of plates.

Thankyou Richard for your comment.i have just put the plates in and only takes four of each including the pressure plate.they are not bronze friction plates but sureflex fibre, and all appears good when all fitted i guess the extra steel plate must be a spare.
