Commando Centre stand - no front return spring hole

Forums

Hi

I'm coming to the end of a long slow rebuild of a 1969 - 1970 750 Commando

I'm fitting stands, the side stand (on its new style new "long stand" mount) fitted fine, spring went on first time, smiles all round

I tried the centre stand, not so good...

the stand is the newer shape, narrow top, and bolted perfectly to the two mount lugs on the bottom loop of the frame. the centre stand has the slotted hole for the return spring.

BUT - the hole for the return spring on the mounting plate, seems too far forward and high, it is 25 - 30mm above and forward from the left hand side stand pivot bolt.

BUT - access to the hole, is blocked as the engine/gearbox cradle sits within a couple of mm inside and hence a spring cannot be turned or located through it

I'm thinking about drilling a new hole, through the engine/gearbox cradle, above the pivot bolt. Its not an easy place to access, but I really don't want to have to pull the engine/gearbox cradle up and out again.

my question is about the location of the hole, is directly above the pivot bolt correct, or should it be slightly forward of the bolt (or is the frame location, 25-30mm above and forward the best location ??

I've attached a picture of the stand, and the underside of the bike hoping it will help

the centre stand bolts are loose as you can see, just not yet fully tightened up while pondering

Apologies for using mm measurements

many thanks for looking

I've been staring at the bottom of the bike (and cleaning the garage floor with my jumper quite effectively) on and off all day, and have just realised the "blocks" on the stand are on the inside face and won't connect with the mounts to stop or locate the stand when in the down position.

Seems I may have the wrong stand, or need some blocks welding on, and re stove finishing again ??

looks like I'm definitely in trouble here.

That is an early late stand, it was strengthened later but it is for mounting onto the engine gearbox cradle regardless of which version.

You need this stand to mount to the frame

or drill holes in the cradle for the bolts to fit the stand you have.

yes, I spoke to Andover (Ashley - as always a font of information) and my early numbers bike needed the 06.1116 model stand, different springs and fixings, where the forward spring hole is in the right position (so I am informed)

such a strange coincidence that the frame mount exactly lines up for the later (my "early late" ) main stand - that was what threw me.

looks like I will end up with a spare, "as new," stand and fixings, but it will probably come in handy somewhere along the line (3 x more Commando's sitting untouched hidden away at home)

thanks for your help and reading, I've posted my own answer, in case it helps someone else
