Commando 850Mk III Rear Sprocket - Wassell

Forums

Hi,

Opinions please. The rear sprocket on my MkIII is well past due for replacement. The one from Andover Norton is about £150 by the time it arrives on my doorstep.

The one from Wassell via the VMCC is less than £50.00

Now if I was doing 25000 miles a year I would be tempted to go for the Andover one but as I do not, and it is a vast difference in price, I am tempted by the Wassell one.

Has anyone experience of the wassell one?

Thanks

Tony

UPDATE - Interesting to hear thoughts but academic as they do not have any is stock and neither do Wassell!

Andover Norton one is on it's way.

Dear Tony,

You justifiably highlight serious concerns regarding the prices of rear sprockets for Mk.III Commandos. From my understanding the Spares Scheme have, in the past, been able to supply the part for around £80. Perhaps these parts were originally supplied to the Club by Wassell Smile.

Best wishes, Colin Cheney.

I bought one from the spares scheme and found the central boss that engages with the speedo drive was about 10 thou oversize so when I did up the spindle retaining nut, it pushed the wheel bearing out. I was able to get it machined down to size by a friend and have done over 3000 miles since but I was not at all pleased.

Did you Try RGM £79.90 plus vat? Normally quick delivery. Size, concentricity and flatness are things to watch for.

Having learnt the hard way where possible I always measure new parts before fitting, at least they are clean then.

if the rear sprocket is well past its wear level i would imagine the chain and gearbox sprocket would be the same and would all need replacing at the same time. i would go for Andover Norton parts.

Wassell, Emgo is only copies made in china, thus against manners cheaper and the adaption is often rock and roll, the factory put quality spares what makes Andover today.

With wassell the pine nut of exit of box and the chain make certainly used abnormally even for a limited use.

My grandmother said: the cheap is expensive.

The price forgets itself and the quality stays.
