Clutch options?

Forums

maybe a daft one to ask ,but here goes, are the clutch plates interchangeable, what i mean is,if you were to have say plain plates with the tangs on the inside and fibre plates with the tangs on the outer, would it matter if you were to fit the opposite combination of plain plates with tangs on the outer and fibre with tangs on the inner. hope this makes some sense,, i have been lucky enough to be given a full set of clutch plates but they are the wrong way round if you know what i mean, someone mentioned post 59 clutches went through a make over,i'm not sure what i have, the engine is 58 but the clutch i'm not sure.

I'm pretty sureyou would have to at leastchange the clutch basket aswellas they are opposite, ie the early basket has cut out segments with friction inserts to mate with the first plain plate, whereas the later type has a plain surface to mate with the first friction plate if that makes sense, but it is certainly possible to convert from one to the other if you haveALL the necessary parts, a friend of mine converted his early type for the latter type & reckoned he had a much improved & lighter clutch. This could, of course, have been down to the fact that his old clutch was well knackered.
