Clutch centre fouling on inner chaincase

Forums

Reassembling my 99 after an engine rebuild. Offering the clutch centre onto the spline shaft it rubs on the inner chaincase. It seems to have some historical wear here but was ok when taken off. Now, when tightening the centre nut the thing seizes up on the inner chaincase. Does anyone have any suggestions? The gearbox was stripped, inspected and reassembled. Could the main shaft not be "out" far enough on the clutch side? No ideas here. Help!

Two possibilitities to consider here.

Either the main shaft is is not protruding enough or the inner chaincase is a bit proud.

I would suggest starting with the latter and checking to make sure that you have not got some washers on the wrong side of its mounting holes, thus pushing it onto the clutch body.

It's hard to see where you might have gone wrong with the gearbox. Is it an AMC type or Laydown? Some people have found that on reassemby using thick gaskets between the cases it has made a slight difference to the clutch position.

Was the clutch body dismantled?

The mainshaft sits inside the layshaft....both pass through the inner chaincase. Check out attachment.
