Clutch cable adjustment gearbox end

Forums

A great website especially if new to nortons. I have just brought a 71 commando roadster hardly mint but runs well. I am changing the clutch cable, I have already adjusted it but notice I dont have adjustment at the gearbox end, I assume there should be some form of screw adjuster, like a triumph? does something screw in there, I think I may have to helicoil where the cable enters the gearbox any idear of the size and part number of fittment, cheers steve

The Commando would normally have cable adjusters on the controls and not at the gearbox. Do some Triumphs have them top and bottom ?

If the lever adjuster isn't sufficient to set free-play correctly then you'll need to modify the cable or ask the dealer if he has an alternative. The different lever patterns fitted over the years can make this a little problematical.

There's no cable adjuster at gearbox end. The two points of adjustment are at the handlebar lever and on the clutch body centre nut. To adjust clutch slacken off handlebar lever knurled knob completely so there's no tension in the cable then adjust the clutch body centre nut as per Manual - screw up tight on the clutch actuating pushrod then back off one and half turns , if I recall correctly. Then check you have a small amount of free movement at the small actuatingleverjust insidethe gearbox filler opening where the clutch cable nippleis attached. Screw up handlebar lever adjuster to leave just a bit of free play.

The hole on the gearbox where clutch cable entersis just a smooth orifice without threadagainst which the outer cable abutts.

thanks for the advice gents, my gearbox end is smooth no thread, at moment it has a brass adjuster ( from a handel bar adjuster I think) withouth that the cable would go straight into the box.
