Chaincase oil leak

Forums

Nortonians, I can't get rid of an oil leak from the chain case following my recent re-build. The output shaft from the gearbox looks central in the primary case oil seal which has been renewed. I have stripped and rebuilt three times now but oil still piddles out when the bike is running.

It's time to go to a belt drive I am afraid. Do you have one for sale, new or second hand will do me - I just wanna get back on the road.

Cheers me dears.

I fitted a belt drive for similar reasons but mine was more of a misty leak. A fewthings come to mind, overful chaincase and or pressurisation via the crank oilseal. Is the oil level rising? Putting the Norton recommended amount in the case can causeleaks. From memory it should be 200cc but 150cc is better. Still enough to coat the chain even if it isn't dipping in the oil continuously. Also it can take a while for the chaincase felt seal to absorb oil and expand. It should equally be a very tight fit on the sleeve gear and fitted squarely (If slightly twisted it can leave a gap). On the BD front mine is a Norvil and it works well though after 20k miles the hard anodising is going leaving a slightly pitted surface on the pulleys. Some will claim it reduces transmission shock but that is rubbish. It does smooth the primary and takes a lot of weight off the gearbox mainshaft. Main points to consider are that the gearbox holes are not oval and it helps to have a second adjuster on the primary side. Belt must be run quite loose(30mm min total play) as the clutch drum heats up and expands substantially.

Keith, thanks very much for your valuable advice. Closer inspection reveals that the gearbox drive shaft isn't quite concentric in the chaincase aperture. Not sure how to adjust that out. Slackening the gearbox mounting bolts and then re-tightening them following a visual recenralisation doesn't work. Will I need some form of spacer/distance piece/shim somewhere in the set-up do you think?

Does anyone have similar experiences they could share with me?

Thanks everybody.

Hello Peter. I assume from your previous posts that you have a Mk3, with no adjustment of the gearbox possible, and a 'fixed' oil seal in the chaincase.

If you enter 'chaincase alignment' in the search box, you will find a thread on this very subject. The problem results from machining 'tolerances' at the factory. The thread suggest some solutions.

Allan.
