Chain sprocket size?

Forums

Hi

I have bought front and rear sprockets from the owners club and a reynolds chain from RGM motors. Both say 5/8 3/8 but they are not compatible, the chain is too small for the sprockets. How do i measure the chain to make sure it is, as it says, 5/8 3/8? Thats presuming the sprockets arent larger than 5/8 3/8

3/8" x 5/8" chain is the standard size for a Commando. Also known as 530. The pitch, i.e. the distance between pins (centre of rollers), is 5/8". The width, i.e. the distance between the inner side plates, measured inside, is 3/8". The other common size you'll come across is 520, or 1/4" x 5/8", which is standard on earlier Nortons. 520, as you might guess, is 1/4" between side plates.

You don't say how your chain doesn't fit but, if you measure the width between the plates it should be slightly greater than the width of a tooth on one of the sprockets. If you measure the distance between pins it should be the same as the step from the centre of one sprocket tooth to the next (you'll have to judge this one).

Normally it's obvious if the chains too narrow, it won't go over a tooth, or if the pitch is wrong, it'll go over a tooth but won't go onto the next one.

Many thanks for that Stan. Looks like i have a 5/8 x 1/4 chain in a 5/8 x 3/8 box, problem solved..
