Camshaft questions

Forums

Evening all, I'm a new member with a 1972 Roadster that needs putting together properly. I have started searching here for a few bits of info already-a great resource it is for sure!

My 1st question is about the camshaft that was in my bike. It is one of the earlier types that had the breather drillings, but my bikes is the 72 'Combat' type. What surprised me was the amount of end float on the cam while the sprocket was still fitted? The 2 thrust washers were present but it still had a lot of end float-approx 1/8" or 3mm.

The only stamping I can see is a small letter 'T' on the side of one lobe.

Do I perhaps need another cam in this crankcase please?

The Dominator camshaft has an end float of around 3mm. This allows the breather disc & spring that sits on the end of the camshaft to run freely.  This form of breather was fitted to the Atlas and  early Commando engines with a breather elbow and vapour hose connected to the left side of the camshaft tunnel.

Thanks for the reply Philip. Yes, I am familiar with the 1st Commando and Atlas cam and breather having previously owned a 70 Fastback and 2 G15s. So perhaps 3mm (approx) is not to be worried about? It seemed a lot to me when stripping the engine, as did the crank end float-but I am aware of how to adjust that one. I won't get to look at my camshaft till much later today, but I don't think it has a flange like the one in the picture above. This is why I wondered if the various cams had different lengths or flanges to suit the various breather types?
