Hello Eddie,

Contact someone from your nearest Norton Owners Club section and borrow a Domi cutaway timing cover. You'll need one to avoid damaging the inner location for the intermediate timing gear spindle, both when slackening & tightening the camshaft & magneto sprocket nuts, also whenadjusting the chains.

You may as well replace both timing chains and the little conical oil pump seal whilst you are in there. This would also be a good time to check that you have the thrust-washer fitted behind the intermediate gear and the alignment of the sprockets.

When you are ready to refit the cover, give the dowels a wipe with an oily rag and bump the cover on temporarily. Then check that the conical oil pump seal holds the cover 0.010" clear of the crankcase. If it doesn't, you can get shim washers to fit behind the conical seal, until you achieve the 0.010".Just grease both sides of the gasket when you are ready to finally fit & tighten the cover. If the joint faces are completely free of old gasket or other debris and are not damaged, you won't need any Hylomar or Silicone Sealer.

As per per Paul Wilson, but also check the tensioners foot for wear. There may well bedeep grooves worn in its surface which is limiting the appliedupward push. This is relatively cheap to replace.
