Hello Barry,

When the engine oil circulating under pressure within the various galleries has reached the big end shells and rocker shafts (later engines), it is drained onto the cam lobes, into the cam bushes; splashed (or squirted in the later engines) onto the bores and âpuddledâ through the main bearings.

Then it collects in the bottom of the crankcases. The return gears in the oil pump draw that oil up a small gallery (once it has been sieved a bit by the sump plug filter) which you can see running up toward the oil pump, on the outside of the case. That gallery has to be drilled at the works and they did it through the boss you can see, then threaded the boss and fitted the grub screw you are referring to in order to seal it.

Paul
