Black chrome exhausts

Has anyone recently had experience of getting an exhaust system black chromed, or even any black finish. Would appreciate details of a company who can do this. I suppose you need to purchase un-chromed pipes / silencers to supply to them (Armours?).

Black Chrome issues were found on early 961 bikes

Hi Mike,
Not sure if this helps but on early 961 Commandos, a black chrome option was available on the exhausts. This was withdrawn very quickly when they found they kept turning a sort of green colour! Whether this is of any relevance to your application, I'm not sure, but worth bearing in mind when you approach any company for that service.

The modern black chrome can looked 'washed out' the alternative is ceramic coating, but this is best applied to chromed parts or stainless steel items as it is porous.

..I have just been exchanging emails with Armour since I am also looking to get some black chromed pipes for my JPN. They said they don't offer black chrome only black powder coated pipes.

For that localised "bubble effect look".
Sounds improbable to me.

Not chrome

Have used high temperature black paint on some racers. Decent matte finish and easily touched up when scratched. Of course not a super finish but on a racer don't matter because of the 100-100 rule. Enough if it looks good when going 100 Mph seen at a distance of 100 feet.

I contacted Merridale but unfortunately they don't deal with individuals which is a pity as their website shows nice work! I will persevere and update NOC website if I have any luck.

Would Merridale do the work if it came from a company? Maybe an approach by one of our regular bespoke suppliers or a group purchase for those who failed to get the finish over the years .

Thanks for the further reply. I had thought of that and sent a note to Merridale yesterday asking if they dealt with any bike suppliers but have received no response as yet. I will give them a call Monday. I did think about asking the likes of Armours if they would be interested in approaching them - any thoughts? Or can you (or anyone) suggest other manufacturers or Norton suppliers who might be worth contacting? Maybe the NOC spares could get involved?
