Avon Roadriders - a heads up

Forums

Just tried to get hold of a 100/90 19 from my local dealer at Beaulieu only to find these are on back order from Avon. This means at least 4 weeks delivery time scale with no definitive delivery date. Asked what the options where - answer, very little in the universal tyre fitting range. Looks like get them while you can.

Any ideas for an alternative would be welcome.

Ashley

I got a set of roadriders from Round and black delivered in a couple of days.

They currently show front and rear tyres at £67 + delivery

Hope this helps

Cheers Mike,

Also found some smaller dealers that had them in stock. A major classic tyre dealer in the midlands was also waiting for stock and advised that the shortage is due the tyre being redesigned as it could be better, it will look the same but will have different compound and stronger sidewalls and construction - how true this I don't know. Though one of the things they mentioned that caused this change is the same same reason as to why I'm now changing it. I was checking ready for the MOT and noticed that despite being near the wear markers and would only raise a advisory, there were unusual wear marks radiating out from the centre grooves that run on the crown of the tyre in-line with tyre rotation.

When I was looking for my last tyre I did contact Avon regarding the weight rating of the tyre for the MK3 even though it is rated at 230kg, I did point out that 2 up touring with gear and that limit would be very nearly reached. The weight rating is lower than the TT100 and the like we had before the roadrider.

Manufacture and delivery to dealers is due to start in the next two weeks, but again the midlands dealer could give no confirmed delivery date.

What about the Dunlop Arrowmax GT501?

Hi Darren,

Looks like it would be ideal, but can't confirm if universal or suitable for tube type. Also, it seems to have been replaced by the Streetsmart at the dealers which does not come in a 19 inch rear fitment.

You could try the Avon AM9 Roadrunner, Norton fitted em & they're still available in 4.10X19. I've used them on the rear with an AM20 90/90X19 up front for years now, seems a good combination in all conditions & gives good mileage. There must be something about them, both these tyres have been around for a long time now while others have come & gone.

Many thanks to those who have replied, I'm tring to avoid using mixed style of tyres, so will wait and see what reply I get from my e-mail sent to Avon UK. I suggest in the meantime that as per good practice, check these tyres on a more regular basis if you have them fitted including the sidewalls. Check the web for more details.

I would have thought that Avon would have issued a news item or technical note regarding the tyre update.

I wouldn't worry about the recommended max. load rating as it is common engineering practice to apply a factor of safety. I've had no probs. so far with RoadRiders, found them to be very good tyres on the Commando, 100/90 x 19 front and rear on 2.5" width rims as recommended by Avon. Are you sure the wheels are inline with each other and the frame centre line?

Simon.

Good news - fitted this morning by Vintage tyres, and a little bit of discount as well for club members. Seeing as their prices are very good including free postage if needed, I was suprised to get a discount.
