Atlas clutch

Forums

I am rebuilding an atlas (Matchless) engine, circa '65 and am taking the primary apart to get to the engine. Question, although I've rebuilt my 72 commando a few times, I am unfamiliar with the clutch on this bike. It has the 3 springs. Do I need a special tool, like the Commando, for the clutch? What do I need to be careful about? What manual would someone recommend as a guide? Thanks

It sounds like you have the standard AMC clutch. You can just unscrew the springs one by one to get to the plates. A puller is needed to remove the clutch centre. (see this link to eBay:http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NORTON-AMC-CLUTCH-CENTER-PULLER-NEW-/260785756356?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&clk_rvr_id=233319835363 Its the type that screws into a thread in the clutch centre, end then you tighten a centerbolt up against then end of the axle. It may be possible to get it off using other arrangements or pullers but be careful not damage either the end of the axle or the centre itself.
