Atlas camshaft

Forums

I am rebuliding a 1965 Atlas engine, it was down because one of the cam followers had failed (Stelite tip broken off)

It had a non-standard camshaft in it (3 key ways where the sprocket fits), the owner tells me it was some kind of "Lumpy" cam.

I have been offered a Model 88/99 cam and followers which i have been told will work, but has less lift (0.302" instead of 0.332" in the Atlas).

I am trying to rebuild this on a budget, so can anyone tell me if this Cam will run satisfactorily in the Atlas, maybe i will lose some performance, but the owner is only looking to use it on a few rideouts now and again. I am just trying to save him the £400ish on a new Cam and followers !

Its been off the road for at least 20 years and would be nice to get another Norton up and running !

Cheers Ian

I can't think of any reason this should not work, try to match up which follower worked on which lobe, compare the breather parts as they changed sometime.Use 3 and 5thou clearances, performance loss will be minimal. The 88/99 cam needs to be Daytona type.

Agreed. No noticable loss in performance (unless you insist on exceeding 6,000 rpm and even then would you notice?). I used 88/99 followers successfully in my Mk 3 Commando after a stellite tip broke off. Does the camshaft need to be the Daytona type? Can't see why. Gordon.

Hello Ian You need A SS cam Marked X1 or early commando cam will do but the followers must match the camshaft and there the Flat Type Cam Followers you must have the breather holes I the Middle and the end of the cam must have the fitting for the disc valve for the breather hope this helps
