ARMOUR Exhausts - Re-Chrome Exhausts

Forums

Hi, Has anyone purchased Commando MK3 down pipes (exhausts) from Armour Motor Products Ltd in Bournemouth? If so, would you kindly let me know if the pipes fitted correctly and give their opinion of the quality of the pipes. Also, as an alternative to purchasing new down pipes; can anyone recommend a company that will re-chrome a pair of exhausts?

Thanks and Regards

Phil

I had two pairs of original Mk3 downpipes re-chromed by a firm called Doug Taylor Plating near Weston-Super-Mare.  The outcome was reasonably good, but I found on both sets that the least accessible region around the balance pipe stub weld was not highly polished. I queried this and was told that it was not possible for polishing mops to get to the area - but they did when the pipes were new.

i previously had a complete Laverda SFC1000 exhaust system re-chromed by S&T Plating in Yate (near Bristol) and the result was excellent but very pricey (£550 ten years ago); hence why I subsequently tried Doug Taylor for the Mk3 pipes.  I suspect that S&T would have got all regions highly polished and maybe I should have accepted the inevitably higher cost.

The cost of electroplating has become eye watering, not just through energy prices, but also businesses having to comply with ever more stringent regulations.

Hi, I bought a 650SS system from Armour (downpipes and silencers) about 5 years ago and was quite pleased with it.

I'm looking for a new system for my '73 750 Roadster so I am also interested in which supplier is best. Rechroming is not an option for me as there was not too much left of the downpipes!!

Chrome plating appears to be heading towards extinction.  I selected nickel plate for an exhaust from Armours last year, and my Inter has had a nickel plated silencer for over 10 years.  Armours did not offer a discount...but since nickel is used as the base for chrome I must assume they made more profit!  Perhaps we shall have to stick to nickel plate in the future?  I never use metal polish on it.  It gets baked-on oil, and I occasionally remove it with caustic soda and it still comes up like new.  Take care....

I have used Rs chrome (see below) 2/3 times over the years. They have no problems with exhaust systems, take a look at their site for more info plus prices.

To overcome the problem of "cant get the buffers into the corners" and subsequent ugly finishes either offer to pay a small premium to have the platers to do it or as in my case the DIY route works for me as I have a Siamese system on my G9 and the junction joint is inaccessible so I ended up doing it myself.

The G9 is an Armour product exhaust with a mega' over 40 years old testament enough as to product quality all those years ago. I had it rechromed after a head change modification to the stubs, otherwise the chrome was still as shiny and intact as it was new.

Armours have downsized over the years with not so many products to offer whether their chrome quality has suffered as a consequence I couldn't say.

Thank you to all who have replied to my request I really appreciate it. I really want to keep my existing pipes as they are in very good condition overall but have lost their shiny lustre in places. Therefore I will contact RSCHROME as per Paul’s recommendation as their pricing seems very reasonable.

Thanks again everyone - I will report back at a later date to let you know how I get on.

Kind Regards Phil
