Ancillary Paint

Forums

Hi, I'm a Norton newbie. Just bought a basket of bits that is supposed to be a 72 Roadster , pre Combat - drum front and rear (still to trace the history via this site). It's black and I need to know what paint is required for the yokes, air box etc. From pix it looks like it should be a silvery / gray.

Also, I've been reading the article on this message board re isolastics. It's left me a bit confused as to which upgrade is the best way to go. What I have at the moment is a the front and rear isos all mixed up in a plastic bag so I would like the easist and best replacement. Not trying to be concours, I want the bike for riding.

As I'm starting from scratch any advice from old hand "experts" would be gratefully received. To save clogging the website drop me a line at colineckford@yahoo.com

Cheers, hope to be on the road before end of summer!! Might as well start optimistic!

Colin, welcome to the world of Commandos. If you've got a determined streak it will be an enjoyable process, if not you might regret it!! Seriously take a look at http://jerrydoe.com/, there is almost everything you need to know on there though it might take some searching as there is a lot of information in the forum. The NOC technical is also good but not as up to date.

On the ISO's I'd recommend replacing all the rubber, PTFE washers and any obviously worn caps and 'abutments' with new. The complete MK3 style stainless kits are nice but not needed unless you want to do big mileages. What is important is to make sure the front mount and main cradle offsets are the same, or at least very close. You'll see more tube extending from the RH than LH. It seems to vary 3/16" to 1/4". Mine were out 060" (more offset on the front) and the whole assy including swing arm pointed left. When corrected the weavingdisappeared and she pulled straight.

On the yokes try halfrauds wheel silver with their petrol proof lacquer. It's not the perfect match but pretty good.

Best of luck

I use 'Steel Wheels' or somesuch on the yokes and later type disc centres. It seems resisatant to most things.
