Amal Mk2 concentric

Forums

Hi, I've bought an Amal Mk2 from RGM for my 77' Mk3, it was supplied witha 15pilot jet in the float bowl and a blanking screw in the carb body, is this right? do you leave the blanking screw in position? also ontrying to set it up it was too rich and hunting all over the place until I pushed hard down on the choke piston, does this have to "seat in"? Hope you can help, cheers Tony.

Tony,

There are two places for the pilot jet, there's one in the float bowl usually for four strokes, and that's where yours is. The other in the body where the blank is, usually for two strokes.

The choke plunger should have a seal, a black "rubber" disc pressed in the end. Check there is indeed a seal fitted and the seat in the carb body isn't marked. Check the lever mechanism isn't holding the plunger off its seat. You may have to adjust or bend it a little.

Despite being a "properly engineered" carb, the Mk2 has a whole host of its own problems. I've been trying to dial in twin Mk2's for the last few years and it's still not 100%, hopefully you'll have a better time with a single carb.

First off the choke plunger is spring loaded down onto a rubber face to close it off. If you unscrew the plunger and look at the rubber you'll see a witness ring from the seat, if there's a ring there its OK. Are you using the lever on the carb or a cable conversion? I can recommend the cable version. In pushing down the plunger what you might actually be doing is stabilising the carb (see 2 below) or closing an air leak.

Thanks guys, the carb is supposed to have a chrome brass slide 3, pilot jet 15, do you think I should change them? Tony.

Keep the settings as delivered if its got a chrome slide and try it out.

Those settings could very well work on a single carb.

If you have problems getting a good idle and clean pickup go for the deep float first before diving in to changing any jets or slide.

I've given it a go and changing the pilot jet to a 25, it ticks over pretty good, and runs well but, when you start to turn the throttle it almost cuts out, if you do it pretty quickly its alright. Any ideas!

Sounds familiar. On my Mk3, I had to change the (chromed brass) slide from 3 (wrong from the start) to 3.5. What helped me further was, after achieving best tickover, to raise the slide stop a bit again (revs increase) and turn intheair needle screw just abit as well (revs decrease) so the mixturebecameslightly richer. Believe it or not , I ended up exactly at 1.5 turn from stop, as per manual! She is picking up sweet now. You could just try the last method first, might be good enough, have not tried that myself.Cheers, Bennie.
