Does the starter kit contain any sort of backfire overload device as in the Mk3 or does it not require it ?

Hi Sam, I've fitted one of these starter kits to my Commando 850 mk2A. I bought it from Norville. It was fairly easy to fit providing you have some mechanical ability, and it helps to understand "Franglais" as the instructions although interpreted into English from French leave a little bit to guesswork! this is where your mechanical ability comes in. The results are a bike that starts very easily on the button. I've only had one failure when the battery was a bit flat (after too many starts without charging) and it did start after I moved the engine on the kickstart to just after compression as if you were starting a big single, so it had a bit of a run at it before hitting compression. To answer your question, it does have a backfire device but it works in a different way to the Mk3 one. Cheers Big Alan

Hi, Big Alan, I have also fitted an Alton starter to my 850 Mk2A. Firstly, did you fit a new triple x chain when you fitted your kit? The reason I am asking is that I have had a problem fitting mine using a new primary chain, which I bought from Andover Norton, as I can't stop the teeth of the clutch basket from hitting the nearest support pillar of the new rear casing as there just simply isn't enough tolerance here. It fits okay with my old primary chain as this has obviously stretched with use.Secondly, how did you overcome the fact that there is no timing mark on the rotor? Thanks, Ian

Thanks for replies.

Alan, yes I know they work good, a friend of mine has one fitted and must say I'm impressed with it.

At the moment I'm waiting for the Mk 3 conversion so maybe at last I can take that useless standard sprag off the bike.
