Alton starter with belt drive?

Forums

Hello all i am going to buy an Atlon starter motor kit for my 1974 850cc bike i want to fit a belt drive kit at the same time and a new set of clutch plates (the bank manager is going to love me) also i wish to run the primary without oil. My standard primary set up is worn but seems to work fine even with tick over stuck at 2800rpm!!! on the hot day of this summer it coped in very heavy town traffic for an hour or so without complaining even at traffic lights with clutch in.

But as i want to fit belt drive and live on very steep hill with a bad camber that makes kick starting a dangous ballancing act that is sure to ending badly one day I decide this is the way to go. I have the money so may as well do it all in one go before life finds other less fun things to spend my money on (is it just me or is life good at doing that?)

So if you have an Alton starter an a belt drive could you please tell me what make of belt drive an if you had any problems fitting or using the two together. I was thinking about the RGM belt drive kit which has a 32mm wide belt but i have read the width of the belt can cause problems fitting the starter kit if the belt is to wide.

thankyou Karl

You have to make sure when fitting a belt drive that the crankshaft and gearbox mainshaft are parallel to each other in two planes 90 degrees to each other. Otherwise the belt will try to run out or in on the front pulley resulting in rapid wear and breakages.

You can check with two good straight edges placed axially on the top side of the shafts and then look from the front or rear of the bike to check for any difference between the edges. Another check with the straight edges on the side of each shaft and with measurements taken between each end of the straight edges looking for any difference.

Alton would be the best people to speak to re belt drive fitting, but personally I would stick with the chain.

Simon.

At the INOA Rally in Wyoming in mid-July, there was a very interesting Tech session from Frank del Monte, the INOA's founder member. He runs a rather nice Commando which is in better condition than his knees.

He outlined a whole series of issues that he had to deal with whilst fitting an Alton starter. At the end of it all he achieved a good result but along the way there were issues that were surprising when you think how long this product has been in development.

The INOA is going to publish his talk but I'm not sure how or where at the moment. I don't recall whether or not Frank was also putting in a belt drive.

Probably was fitting a belt drive because not many 'issues' when fitting with a chain drive.
