72 Roadster headlight upgrade

Forums

I've just bought a commando and the headlight is awful. It looks like a halogen bulb has been fitted to a non halogen unit which means there is no dip or main beam. Just a change in intensity. I'm not sure if the shell is standard either but the size of the glass coming out of the rim is 6.5 inches.

Can anyone suggest a good solution / replacement?

Thanks

Gary

The best solution would be to replace the headlight with the correct one for the bike, and use the correct Lucas headlight unit and regular filament bulbs. In case of emergency, there is room in the headlight shell to carry spare headlight and tail light bulbs. The parts book should help with finding the correct shell, unit, accessories, etc.

Hi, try a Wipac Quadoptic unit, I see them in Landrover spares adverts. Also very good is a Cibie Z-beam unit. you have to use a good quality bulb, and change the connectors.

I've looked at the light again and the reflector has quite a bit of corrosion on it. I think it will be better to do a replacement. Could anyone confirm if 6.5 inches is the standard (as measured on the visible glass with it fitted in the headlight) ? I'm not sure if it is standard or not.

There are a lot of "rubbish" halogen bulbs out there. The first halogen bulb I bought was, as you describe, useless, it gave a bright light, but no beam at all. However the correct bulbs are available, with the filaments in the right position to give a good main, and dipped beam. Forget Halfords, and go to a specialist supplier.
