Hi Pete,

Your '58 Dommi would be an altenater electrical system and according to my Norton maintenance book would probably have been fitted with coil ignition although it is common to see them with a Lucas magneto, (you pay your money and take your choice) although obviously there are differences re. the wiring loom.

I don't know the answer regarding the C following the 99 stamping but I've just checked my 1959 '88' engine and spare engine (same year) and they also are stamped with a C so you could be correct. I would advise you to try to find someone local to you with some knowledge of the Dominators as there are many parts for sale for these machines which look correct but may be for a comletely different model.

Best of luck, Rob.

Hi Pete, well to my surprise so am I also restoring a 1958 99 which turned out to be the first 99 S S to be sold back in the 1st of January 1958, your bike should have a magneto, the C does stand for coil so you are correct, look on Ebay that is where I got my spares list, it shows the original cost of 4s and 6d, you will also be able to purchase an maintainance manual and instruction book on there, unfortunately they do not go before 1960 but the engine did not change until later on, the standard 88-99 bottom end was the same, nothing much changed until they brought out the 650 which had a larger bore size and pistons, which varied, I am still working out how to remove the sprocket off the mag as mine will not come off so I can fit new chains, I hope this will help you Pete, Graham Booth in Nottingham.

hello patricia I have too say I disagree with you comments For start The 99SS was first built in April 1961. So your Machine is NOT a SS but a twin carbs clubman built for export and would been in metal-screen blue or post office red fitted with coil ignition and that is what C stand's for , but some machine had magneto fitted at a later date by the importer ,but still got the C stamped on the cases ,I hope this clears your query your Anna j

Sorry but you are wrong, after recieving an email from Dale Middlehurst who has already checked my engine number, he now informs me that in 1958 there was a small number of 88-99 SS spec Dominators made which had Magneto's fitted to them, they had polished ports, twin carbs, improved camshaft, and 8.25 or 9.1 compression pistons fitted to them, these were factory made machines and sold to the general public. my own bike is one of these few SS machines now being renorvated, I hope this information will bring everybody upto date on the history of Norton Dominators, check with Dale Middlehurst if anyone doubts me. take a look at the Dunstall machine. it is an attachment

Hello all who Reads This thread I have Contacted Dale Middlehust and he did not say that this machine in question was a SS model It Is still a question over this machine , I cannot judge on what I have Not Seen and the photos on this web page are too good ether , But For A (99) to be a SS model it as to have Manxman Crankcases with the hump on the back and Manxman barrels and camshaft is SS marked X1 And have the fat type push rods the camfollowers are the flat type to match the camshaft the cylinder head was Standard But gas flowen with big valves and a splade inlet spacer for twin carburretters 376/220 and stamped 99SS above the breather pipe and above the workshop number if this not there then its NOT a SS model . I don't recall anyone asking Anna to "judge" anything ( her words- "I cannot judge on what I have Not Seen ") ?

The original question was (and I quote)

"MY QUESTION IS WHAT IGNITION LAYOUT SHOULD I HAVE, MAG/DYNO COILS ETC, WOULD I BE CORRECT IN SAYING THAT THE NUMBER 99C STAMPED ON THE CASE DENOTES "COIL".

That question has been answered (several times).

Please let it go about the SS issue, Pete didn't ask (Anna) what she thought, He obviouslydisagrees, let it go already!

Hi Peter.

RGM do a 1959 parts book for the Dommi. Type - 1959 ILLUSTRATED PARTS BOOK - into their search box in their catalogue section and it should come up. It's £8.50 I think. Not a lot changed from 58 to 59. The onlyimmediately noticeable thing would be the swinging arm fixings for the rear chainguard and the chainguard itself. Don't pay too much attention to the illustrations in the book- Norton's had a habit of using the same ones year in, year out! Mick Walker's 'Norton Dominator' book is the best I've seen on Dommi's and well worth having when restoring one. I'm (re-)restoring my own Dommi at the moment which is also a 58 and has been 'in the family' since 64-66. Let me know what bits you're after and I might be able to point you in the right direction. 'C', I'm certain , does stand for coil. I have a 1960 ES2 fuly restored which uses pretty much the same cycle parts so if you are stuck I could help with identication too

Regards

Ian.
