1968 Norton Dominator

Forums

Just aquired a 1968 Norton Dominator which requires restoration. My initial plan is to get the running gear (engine, gearbox etc) sorted by proffessional restorer. Does anybody know of a reputable and reliable restorer in the North East of England ?

Hello what's wrong with doing it your self . I am a woman And i have rebuilt a number of Norton's in the past And I have two on my bench's now on to finish of and the other has the top end of for the cylinder head repair , So if your bike is a Atlas or 650 Mercury the pares are better to get for the late dominator's ,So get stuck in and do it bit at a time do not rush the job before you start take lots of photos where things are and the spoke patents to ,and Have some good parts bins to store the parts in so you do not loss anything and take photo when your striping it down so you can see where it was before hand , for Nuts and bolts I use Nooky,s Nut www.nookysnuts.co.uk he has some very nice nickel plated Nuts and bolts &washers in Whitworth or Cycle thread ,or BSF UNF UNC or Metric ,but most Norton of the 60s where in Cycle thread and whitworth threads So you may find a good set of taps and dies very useful and you need some special tooling like the half timing gear puller you can make a rocker spindle puller out of a pace of tube and a bolt and some washers ,as for the paint work that take its own time you have get the paint striper out and do a bit at a time do not rush the job when you have all the paint of and good wash down is needed to get the whats left of the paint striper off , and dry it with clean cloths , then you can start the priming process , I use P182 Zinc primer you can bush paint this on to start with as you will have too rub it back anyway ,aerosol car spray paint is OK its easier and cheaper that going to the expense of buying and compressor and paint guns Etc , has you can get Black and Ford Silver Fox almost anywhere , anyway I hope this may help but if you get stuck you can anyways bring it too me, yours annajeannette@btinternet.com Anna Jeannette Dixon , East Yorkshire Branch

Hi David, unless you are mechanically minded, you have the right idea. Without a well equipped workshop, and some specialist tools, leave the power unit & gearbox to an expert. Sorry I don't know one in your area. We all have different talents, what is easy to some is "Black Magic" to others. Your post did not mention restoration of the rolling chassis, but, rather than mess about with paint stripper, having the frame sand blasted to bare metal is the best way to start. Regards, John.

Hi, thanks for the info, unfortunately 3 kids, work commitments etc etc prevents me from restoring it myself. In a few years I may be able to do it when I get some of my life back !! What spare time I do get I prefer to ride my bikes rather than restore, having said that I have just spent a couple of months getting my Ducati back on the road. Anyway thanks again for the info and I will continue on my quest to get the engine sorted.
