1963 Slimline engine and frame numbering

Hi,

I plan to purchase 1963 Norton Slimline and cofused with the engine number which read as 88/105440/P. This is something new to me as owner of Norton Model 7 & Wideline which has different format of numberings.

Also I don't see 122 in this Slimline engine. So can anyone please confirm if the engine is correct? Does the word P exsist starting 1963 onward? Thanks

10500 series is for 1963 model year. The engine should be stamped 88 for, oddly enough, an 88. Not sure aboutthe P though - P was the 1959 model year but the lettering was discontinued after R and 1960.

My 99 engine is stamped99C 85787 butthe frame is stamped 14R 85785 - so only the frame number is on both. That makes it a 1960 model year bike though it was registered in December 1959. Hope that helps.

You mean to have 88 instead of 122 in the engine is something wrong? Or it is normal to have 88?

88/105440/P............This engine was built at the end of 1963. By then, all Norton production was at Plumstead. This is confirmed by the suffix letter 'P' after the number.

The frame should be stamped with122 105440. Early engines from Bracebridge had 122 stamped on the front left of the cases but some later Plumstead built engines had 88 or 88SS.

Thanks David. So what about your frame? It also starts with 88 follow by the engine number and without the letter P? As the bike I see the frame stamped as 88/10544 without the letter P.
