1955 Model 7 clutch

Forums

Can I run the clutch as a dry clutch? I have been told I can?

The advice was to put thick sticky grease on the clutch bearing and to regularly use chain lubricant. What about the clutch plates, will they be damaged?

The stiky grease type or manufacture were not specified.

Any advice would be great.

Have a look through various other threads where this has been discussed at length. Some say yes, I say no - it's an oil bath chaincase for a good reason and you run it dry at your peril. Gordon.

Just curious as to why you want to run the primary dry?

But, if you have the original ferrodo type plates there is no reason to not run dry,my Ariel has a dry ferrodo type clutch fitted from the factory, and I have been dragging a heavy chair with it for many miles, though the primary chain is enclosed in an oil bath behind the clutch basket, to keep it healthy.

The clutch hub bearing would be OK packed in wheel bearing grease, after all, it only works momentarily when the clutch is operated to change gears or to initially move off from stationary.Unlike a wheel bearing which is always working with a heavy loadwhen the vehicle is moving, and survives with just an initial grease packing.
