Model Number required for:-               Jubilee, Navigator and Electra

Part Number:-                                          20871

Also used on if known:-                          All Norton Lightweights. Four per engine.

Implication of lack of part:-                    Vehicle Off Road. Old ones wear on face and shaft.

High wear part which needs frequent replacement

Routes you have tried to acquire the part and response received:-

1. NOC Spares are out of stock. None on order.

2.  Not available from NORVIL, RGM or any other known Norton parts provider

Do you have a worn or damaged part available as a pattern?:-       Yes

Based on price for similar parts, what would you expect to pay (give range) £40 - £60 + VAT each

Comments:    This is a key Lightweight engine critical spare which can’t be sourced elsewhere.   With the growing popularity of the Lightweight twins and the plentiful supply of spares for most of the other Norton models could the NOC provide support to loyal club members by prioritising this vital spare part?

Is anyone else in the same position?  Or know where there are four new tappets to help the member that raised this parts Commisioning request.

If more members are looking for this part please indicate on this thread. it would help the justification to launch a batch and guide the batch size.

Thanks

An update.

I've redrawn the item and got a competitive quotation for the supply of a batch of 200 Tappets 20871.

They will be assembled from two parts like the original. The flat face following the cam will be hard chromed, like the original.

They will be compatible with the existing pushrods, follower bushes and camshafts.

Approval for manufacture has been given by the NOC directors and an order should be winging it's way to the supplier. The competent supplier has been in business for many years, and  was a past supplier to the Norton Rotaries. I don't intend to enter a debate on the choice of supplier.

Good news I hope. I can't tell you the final price, but I can tell you that the current NOC shop price reflects costs of the last batch made 15 years ago.

I'd like to add my name to the Interested list!

Will keep an eye on this thread for updates re price and date.

Thanks all, Mike.

Last week, it being about six weeks since the NOC order arrived at the manufacturer, I rang the production company. Their quoted lead time, six weeks, some months ago.

In week 2,  I met with the MD personally and gave him some originals for review.

They have started, the items are on the lathe. They should be much further on.

Orders have gone a bit mad, apparently, and I think Brexit/Suez Canal has scared a lot of companies into looking at UK suppliers for their parts.

The MD is very apologetic. Assures that some samples will be pushed through ahead of the rest. And reminded me the hard chroming is internal.

We agreed to review again Spring Bank Holiday - end May.

Might sound a bit laid back for some.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for all your hard work arranging for the manufacture of new tappets for lightweight twins and it sounds like you are almost there.    Has there been any further progress and is there a forecast date for them to become available?    They are the last thing I am waiting for to start my Nvigator engine rebuild.

Thanks again for leading on this!   Nick

Hi Nick,

This received today from the manufacturer.

"First batch at platers, should have samples end next week, will call you"

They are more than a bit overdue but is this light I see at the end of the tunnel?

Cheers

Hi Peter, thanks so much for chasing them - that sounds hopeful!   Any update on the light or is it the train that is about to hit us????!!!

Cheers   Nick

Hi again Peter,

I've got my Navigator engine stripped ready for it's rebuild with all the spares required apart from the Tappets / Cam followers.   Any update on availability of the first batch?

Cheers

Nick.

Hi Nick,

About a month ago I inspected and approved the first ten cam followers for the NOC spares scheme.

One week ago I learnt that the first batch of 50 cam followers were with Neil Shoosmith. Last time I looked the NOC shop hadn't been updated to show any stock or a new price.

Perhaps you could try a call or mail to Neil.

Thank you for being so patient. And I'm sorry it's taken so long.

Best wishes

Peter

Hi Peter,

Today I saw that the new cam followers were available on the NOC Spares site so I have ordered 4.    Sadly they were more expensive than the set of rare + 20 thou original pistons I was lucky enough to buy recently off ebay but needs must and given the complexity of manufacture and the price of Heavyweight and Commando cam followers a very fair price.   Thank you so much for all your hard work, expertise and perseverance in negotiating their manufacture, I like many are truly endebted to you and the spares team for helping to keep our much loved Lightweight twins on the road.   Now I have no excuse for not starting the long awaited rebuild!   Mine's the first pint when we meet up hopefully sometime in the future!

Bless you and thanks again.  Nick
