Stanchion v.s. Fork slider

Forums

Hello Forum

In Jan 2021, I purchased a pair of stanchions and sliders from Andover Norton for my 73 Norton Commando.

Upon assembly, I'm finding that the stanchion bushing will not pass into the opening at the top of the slider.  Any advice appreciated.  Thank you

Measure the bush, the bore of the stanchion and compare to the workshop manual data. That will tell you want is at fault, where did you get the bush from ? AN as well or another source.

Data

Bottom bush that fits on stanchion 1.4979" to 1.4990"

Stanchion ID 1.4995" to 1.5010"

... bought a set of fork bushes from RGM and a set of stanchions from AN. The stanchions were exactly on size: the bushes wouldn't go onto the stanchions at all and on measuring were about .002" undersize. I may have the exact figure wrong as it was some time ago.

I had a terrible time getting my money back from RGM although I think they're much better these days. I also remember getting a fork brace from them where the fine adjustment to ensure that the centres were compatible with the stanchions were by selection of paper washers! Again a struggle to get a refund.

I found the same problem when reassembling a set of Commando forks. Firstly ascertain the I.D of the bush and then the O.D of the stanchion. The difference will be the {minimum} amount that needs removing from the inside of the bush. I say that but be careful though as the discrepancy is likely to be less than you think. Anything below .0002" and you could spin the bush in a lathe chuck and run a piece of wet & dry inside in a uniform manner. If the difference is above .0002" you could consider a boring bar tool bit and removing .0001" and see where you go from there. The phosphor bronze bushes I fitted to my 850 required machining to size in order to fit. The whole process must be done very gingerly as it will be very easy to remove too much material. The whole process could be entrusted to someone with reasonable machining skills and shouldn't take long to do at all.
