Commando Done

Forums

Hi all - I finished up my Commando this morning - 1972 750 Combat Roadster.

I started this project about 10 years back . I built new wheels in Stainless , drilled the rotor and had it Blanchard ground and had the master cylinder sleeved and that is as far as it got when Super Storm Sandy hit us . I lifted it up of the garage floor but sadly not high enough and it got a salt water bath up to mid - timing chest.

To make a long story a little shorter , life got in the way for a while and it was five years to the day after the storm that I was able to return to working on it.

Total redo of everything including a new main frame as seawater had entered the frame through a weld perforation at the side stand tab and corroded the tubing from the inside out .

The only things that did not come apart were the cam bushes and the rocker shaft bushes because they were fine and I didn’t think I could improve them .  Commando

Your perseverance has certainly paid off.

Hi John - The seat is a Corbin Gunfighter with a custom fiberglass cowl that I made .

I will try to post a link to my build thread on Access Norton - if that fails I can post details here for any that may be interested.

Let me know if it works - Thanks everyone for the compliments .

Well done - it looks fantastic!

Ian.

Thanks everyone for the interest and compliments.

I am having some idle issues - starts easily and idles very nice with air slides down ( choked) but races when slides are opened up. I am charging up a battery to power a timing strobe light and while waiting for that I have removed the tank and going through throttle cables and throttle stop screws etc to eliminate raised throttle slides from the equation. These are brand new Amal Premieres. I did disassemble them on the bench and went through them before mounting as I have heard many stories of swarf, blocked passages, etc . I am happy to report that non of that was in evidence in my pair. If the timing checks out ok but the idle issues persist then I suppose the next area of investigation will be air leaks then pilot jets ? I certainly welcome any input .

Cheers - Richard

I fitted new premiers on my 850, and had a few running problems. The pilot jets fitted were 17 and bike would not run without full choke. I was advised to fit 19 which helped a lot and now ticks over well. I am now checking the fuel height which appears on first check to be too low on the right side.  Not got round to sorting it yet.
