I have a 1972 commando purchased last year which has oil leaking from the kickstart shaft. I have removed the five screws, footrest, kick start and gear lever, but the cover is stuck fast. I have tried tapping the cover with a mallet, but it looks as though it was sealed with a jointing compound as well as a gasket when last replaced. Has anyone else had a similar experience and if so please can you advise me. Thanks, Chris

"leave the gear lever on to give you something to tug with"
Yayyy!!!
By strange coincidence I encountered the exact same issue last weekend.
Although aware of how the gear change works, I'd completely forgotten that an implication is that one can use the gear lever as another kind of lever …
Many thanks, Simon.

I seem to remember..
.. that I got a stuck one off by putting a tyre lever through the clutch adjusting orifice and using that to lever the cover off. Once it starts it's easy.

A slide hammer with claws…
A slide hammer with claws that go thro the inspection plate would be the ideal. With all the time on our hands we have all made one by now??!.

I tried yesterday with the tool I made and it helped. It is simply a dural plate that attaches to the inspection cover sockets and has a tapped hole with a stud that contacts the steel of the clutch release mechanism. By tightening the stud pressure is applied to the outer cover to help push it off. I first tightened the stud then applied a little gentle heat before pulling on the gear lever and the cover released. The attached pictures show the tool in place from outside and inside the cover and highlight the point of contact of the stud. Thanks again for all of the help and advice.

Gear box cover
Hi, does the x type o Ring fit the outer cover without any machining?

Yep, just replaced mine a couple of days ago. It’s been stuck there for 46 years. Stuck tight. Perseverance was definitely needed to stop me from attacking it with a screwdriver. Take it easy, it’s the dowels holding it. Perhaps a bit of heat to soften the gasket and goo may help? It will part once you have weakened its hold. My leak was from the gear lever, but while I was in there I replaced both o-ring seals with the modded x-rings. Sorted.
Oh, leave the gear lever on to give you something to tug with.
