Oil Filter hose protectors

Forums

Hi,

I know that things are not normally fitted without good reason, but do the spiral hose protectors fitted to the oil return pipes at the filter really serve a useful purpose, especially since in the International  Norton Owners Association Digest it is suggested that if using stainless steel braided hoses care should be taken to ensure that they cannot rub up against anything since quote ' they may an effective low grade hacksaw'?

In other words, if I ensure the hoses are free from contact with other parts of the bike, is it reasonable to assume that I can get away without these?

I have noticed significant wear to the original "ribbed" rubber hoses used on Commandos where they have rubbed against the engine plate etc. So I'd say there is a reason for the coiled steel sleeves. But overbraided hose probably doesn't need the sleeve. In fact you might want to put a rubber sleeve on an overbraided hose to protect the bike. An alternative might be to put rubber protectors on the bike rather than sleeve the hoses.

The springs do also help the hoses to keep a reasonable radius and not kink. I suspect that a modern plastic hydraulic hose guard spiral would do just as well, without being able to saw anything else.

… as Richard Pyne reasonably calls them, seem to have the merits he points out. I suspect they would wear rather than (e.g.) the gearbox cradle or other metal parts they might rub on.

And stainless braiding makes a very effective, if slow-acting, hacksaw.

Hi

When i rebuilt my Commando with the oil filter I took a long hard look at those pipes, they are so close to everything.

Having already purchased the new metal protectors. I could not bring myself to fit them as they were going to rub my newly painted frame and engine plates.

I used the original oil pipes which were undamaged so in my case the old metal protectors did work.

Instead I used a heavy plastic cable tidy that was easy to fit and manoeuvre into position and didn't damage paint or pipes, only covered 200 miles but there is no rubbing.  I will report back if I have problems
